What does one say about a girl like Elke? Elke is the star of the paddock wherever she lives, and it isn't because she's an appaloosa. It's because of her personality. Elke is an own daughter of 6Peruvian Century, a very little-used harlequin herdsire who was imported in-utero. Century's dam, 6Peruvian Bruna, is one of the twenty-odd original imports to bring the harlequin gene into the United States. She was a cornerstone to the Magical Farms' herd, with dozens of decedents to her credit -- a very good number of them champions and champion-producers, and a very good number of them harlequin. Elke herself inherited the appaloosa spotting of her sire. While she missed out on the full-on transformation to harlequin grey, she is clearly capable of producing it, as her daughter, Maxine -- a very dark silver harlequin -- is the reason we brought her here in the first place. The only reason that Elke is for sale for this price is simply that she is extremely stretchy in build, while our farm is breeding for compact and square. (She was purchased in a package with her harlequin daughter.) That said, her conformation is spot-on -- straight lines all around -- and she has very good bone for her frame style. Her fleece exhibits exceptional retained fineness; at age 12, she is still extremely fine and uniform, and her excellent brightness rounds things out to produce an excellent hand. At age 12, she is still extremely soft. At the beginning of this write-up, I mentioned her temperament, and a description of Elke would not be complete without elaborating on this. Elke loves people, specifically men, and, when open, she will cush at the feet of any male human who enters her paddock. She is not pushy, and it is totally endearing and, in fact, quite hilarious. She isn't mean to women, and she seems to enjoy their company, but she definitely knows what gender people are. She's a different character when bred ... As most females are. So, here is an opportunity to acquire a female appaloosa, who is extremely fine, and perfectly conformed -- from a line of potent harlequin-producers -- who has already produced a harlequin herself -- for an amazing price -- simply because her body type does not fit our program. To make things even better, this price includes a breeding to any of our herdsires, and I truly believe that the one who compliments her best is our appaloosa stud, Mr. Butterscotch.

CONGRATULATIONS to Lindsey Betz and the Betz Family Farm on the purchase of Vintage Cashmere's U-Taupe-ia. Taupie will be greatly missed at Rare Gem Alpacas but he leaves behind a number of lovely offspring to grace our herd for years to come! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Taupie is a striking appaloosa harlequin male that is on a roll for throwing spotted and harlequin offspring. He has sired 53 offspring and 74 percent are either appaloosa or harlequin! While dam selection has a significant influence on such outcomes, it should be noted that the majority of the dams Taupie has been bred to have no genetic influence on this outcome. So for those that don't have existing foundation girls with appy / harlequin lineage-- Taupie has proven to be capable of passing along his appy genetics and produce desired results. So how does this happen? Only part of that story is known, but what we DO know is that certain lines of known appy gene carriers are much more "expressive" than others. Taupie just happens to be one of those. His heritage boasts appaloosa genetics on both sides of his lineage with Aussie Rockford out of Hannahruh on his sire's side and Chiquita Import on his dam's side. In April 2016, Taupie's progeny debuted in the show ring taking a blue in walking fleece and the blue in halter at the California Classic. This first boy was then followed by another appaloosa female and then another appy male-- both very similar to the first. The fourth cria, however, is something extra special! This little girl has expressed every color on the chart, not one pattern-- just speckles and spots from nose to toes-- Rare Gem U-Taupe-ia's Appletini! The unique coloring of this cria looks as though the color from Taupie's Grand Dam, Chiquita Import, is coming through and producing the rarest of rare gems-- her beautiful color seems to morph before your eyes! As much fun as it is to talk about Taupie's progeny... more about him! Taupie has a spotted face, spotted belly, spotted legs, and a beautiful solid platinum-taupe blanket. His top line is a nice medium silver grey, then blending into light silver grey down the sides. UPDATE: 2/2019 Leoopard appaloosa offspring, Sleepy Acres App-solutely Adorable "Dorie", takes Reserve Color Champion at Txolan! Congratulations!!

Description

Look at that FACE! Max is a large-framed, stately female in the most exquisite shade of ultra-dark silver grey. It is very hard to find this gorgeous color in a tuxedo, and when they do pop up, they are usually spotted. In a great show of irony, it is the extra-dark harlequins -- like Maxine -- who offer the most uniform example of this awesome color. Maxine is a rare fourth-generation harlequin appaloosa. Her dam, Elke, is a true appaloosa whose sire, 6Peruvian Century, was a rose grey harlequin. Max's sire line is also noteworthy as she is an own daughter of multiple-champion Mile High The Reverend Mr. Black. Mr. Black showed at the height of alpaca show popularity, so he was crowned champion in fields of 50-70 alpacas per color class. A true black grandson of impact herdsire Peruvian Bueno, Mr. Black has made a name for himself as a producer of champions, with Futurity Champion Deacon Grey among his most notable. Max inherited the impeccable conformation of both sire and dam. She is arrow straight from any angle. Her proportions are balanced, if stretchy -- she did inherit a good measure of her dam's lankiness -- and she has good, sound bone. Her head exhibits good type, with a blocky muzzle and appropriate proportions. This girl inherited some very good fineness from her sire and dam with an extra boost of density from her sire. Her density is excellent. Her fleece is fine enough that I had to double-check her age -- getting that lasting fineness from both sides doesn't hurt! Max's fleece promises to produce some fantastic yarn, and the fact that this will be her 8th offering of it is pretty fantastic. These harlequins are beautiful to look at in the paddock, but the fleece is the really big deal! Max's 2016 cria was an absolutely stunning harlequin appaloosa female who had a very unfortunate accident and passed in Summer of 2017. Her name was Cheetah both for her well positioned but numerous spots at birth but also for her speed around the paddock. (Thank you Kitt for some very well informed dialogue above :)) Willow Wind purchased Max from Howling Hill Farm in 2016 with a breeding to that same male; PVA King of Diamonds. And Lo and BEHOLD; Max had a repeat cria. Another perfectly conformed and spotted female with gorgeous fiber! This girl is easily described as adorable but it would be selling her short not to call her gorgeous. And like her full sister - her fleece is outstanding. AND she also races around the paddock - fastest cria in the bunch. With the permission of Howling Hill, we have named her Pixie Cheetah as a tribute to her beautiful sister. Look for Willow Wind' Pixie Cheetah in the show ring in Spring 2018.
