Max is a large-framed, stately female in the most exquisite shade of ultra-dark silver grey. It is very hard to find this gorgeous color in a tuxedo, and when they do pop up, they are usually spotted. In a great show of irony, it is the extra-dark harlequins -- like Maxine -- who offer the most uniform example of this awesome color.
Maxine is a rare fourth-generation harlequin appaloosa. Her dam, Elke, is a true appaloosa whose sire, 6Peruvian Century, was a rose grey harlequin. He was an in-utero import out of 6P Bruna, who was, in turn, one of the original twenty-odd imports to bring the harlequin gene into this country. Bruna was also one of the cornerstone females in Magical Farms' herd, with dozens of descendents, many of them champions.
Max's sire line is pretty nice as well, as she is an own daughter of multiple-champion Mile High The Reverend Mr. Black. Mr. Black showed at the height of alpaca show popularity, so he was crowned champion in fields of 50-70 alpacas per color class -- no mean feat! A true black grandson of impact herdsire Peruvian Bueno, Mr. Black has made a name for himself as a producer of champions, with Futurity Champion Deacon Grey among his most notable.
Max inherited the impeccable conformation of both sire and dam. She is arrow straight from any angle. Her proportions are balanced, if stretchy -- she did inherit a good measure of her dam's lankiness -- and she has good, sound bone. Her head exhibits good type, with a blocky muzzle and appropriate proportions.
This girl inherited some very good fineness from her sire and dam with an extra boost of density from her sire. Her density is excellent. Her fleece is fine enough that I had to double-check her age -- yes, she's seven (!) -- getting that lasting fineness from both sides doesn't hurt! Max's fleece promises to produce some fantastic yarn, and the fact that this will be her 8th offering of it is pretty fantastic. These harlequins are beautiful to look at in the paddock, but the fleece is the really big deal!
Max's 2016 cria absolutely blew me away. Not only did she deliver the harlequin appaloosa female I had hoped for, but this cria has a fleece beyond anything I had dreamed of. My original intent was to sell Max after she delivered -- keeping the cria if it happened to be a harlequin girl. Now, because of her quality, I am not so sure that I want to sell Max after all!
Since I will be keeping Max's 2016 cria, an interested party would have 12 months' free board for Max, along with 12-months free financing to pay for her. I will be breeding her back to King of Diamonds.
