Description

I ran across this explanation of what someone looked for in a Herd Sire and thought I would include it here since we feel Siggy meets or exceeds this description. What do you look for in a Herd Sire? "We look for the following things: temperament, frame, fleece, and fertility. The reason we place so much importance on these things is that they are inheritable traits. Confirmation (frame), the male has to have a beautiful straight back and a big solid frame. When we look at him I want to see a 'wow factor! Temperament, the male HAS to have a quiet, easy-going nature. Fleece coverage and heavy leg coverage throughout their lives. The males pictured get completely shorn each year so what you see is what has grown back in 12 months, that's the type of fleece coverage I like to see! Fleece, fine micron, long length, good density, lack of primary follicles, uniform with strong crimp, and softness. If a male is 'fat/overweight' and as all the above features in his fleece, then he is a genuine male. (Some fine micron alpacas are 'hunger fine' and aren't showing the genuine micron they will have once put into a 'good paddock'). Fertility is a must! Without high fertility, the male is useless and worthless to a breeder. The progeny, some stud males tick all the right boxes but they can not produce better than themselves. I want a stud male that not only improves the female's quality but continually produces something better than themselves at the same time. These are the basic things we look for and require from our stud males. Only the best of the best will do!
