When we look at the potential for breeding results on paper, we have an idea of what the best possible results might be. Coltrane is perhaps the embodiment of that possibility from the breeding of Snowmass Enlightenment to FRA Safari. The fine folks at Front Range Alpacas made this decision and I was lucky enough to discover that Safari was for sale breed to this awesome sire who I had become very enamored of when I saw him win Reserve Champion in a very competitive gray class in 2009 at AOBA Nationals. Enlightenment was almost 5 at the time and everything about him was what I hoped to bring to my breeding program in Carolina.
Coltrane is carrying 1 first place and 2 second place finishes in halter in VERY competitive fields. My finest hour with him may have been his 2nd place finish to CCNF Elixir at Southern Select where Elixir went on to take the championship, of course! The two have also finished in succession in fleece competition at AOA Nationals in 2014. Coltrane has 2 Reserve Championships in fleece competition and ...remember...he is beige out of black and rose gray! Some would say he might be competing with a handicap.
When showing his second shearing at a sorting class, Judge Wini LaBrecque asked our permission to replace her example of grade 1 fiber in our workbooks with a sample of Coltrane clip...we were honored to oblige!
Judge Kathy Klay commented on his 42.7 month fleece remarking "nice definition of crimp skin to tip; great growth of staple" and awarded the following points:
Length 6 (out of 7)
Color 5 (out of 5)
Character 7 (out of 10)
Brightness 7 (out of 10)
Coltrane is a large male at 185 pounds. He packs a dense, soft handling fleece that shears upwards of 5 pounds primary blanket and comes in at 22 micron at 4 years of age with a 3.7 SD, 18.7 CV. He is beige with the slightest cap and topline of light fawn. It is my sincere belief that he will show stealth gray characteristics if bred correctly and that rose gray of his sire will come through in his offspring.
Coltrane has one daughter on the farm, Two Crows Farm Suzanne. She is very typey, dense and shows lovely crimp and brightness. We are just getting started with his breeding career. Two additional females are due to deliver this spring 2019.
