AML El Duro's Vivanno

HuacayaHerdsire (Male)Medium Rose Grey
AOA# 31097703DOB: 6/24/200816 yrs
Vivanno is a big, tall, assertive male with amazing presence. He is the herd leader, independent and confident. He is outgoing and gentle with other males and with humans, and is a highly intelligent alpaca. Vivanno is an own son of AML Legacy's El Duro (AKA "Pedro"), who was a fawn son of the legendary Accoyo Peruvian Legacy. El Duro was renowned in his lifetime for his exceptional prepotency -- he stamped his get with impeccable conformation and terrific density, and a very high proportion of his offspring were show winners and champions. El Duro is sadly now deceased, making his exceptional genetics somewhat of a rarity, with less than 60 offspring total. Vivanno is one of the only grey sons of El Duro, and, to our knowledge, the only classic grey son who is currently standing at stud. True to his sire's legacy, Vivanno's conformation is faultlessly correct. He is tall, with solid, thick bone, a strong, blocky head, and an ideal topline with a low tailset. He moves fluidly and powerfully. Proving again the prepotency of El Duro, Vivanno is possessed of a very dense fiber with a terrific staple length, even at six years of age. His juvenile fleece was exceptionally fine, with an AFD of 16.4 and a comfort factor of 99.4% at his first shearing. While an ultra-fine first fleece is great, the true value is in fineness over time, and Vivanno has not disappointed in this regard. His 2014 shearing -- that's his SIXTH fleece -- was still mighty fine, with an AFD of 22.8 and a comfort factor of 91.6%. That's finer than a lot of greys have on their first fleece! Vivanno now has seven cria on the ground, and wow -- these are some seriously nice ones. He is making beautiful heads, perfect conformation (even in dams with less-than-perfect conformation), big bone, and full coverage (again, even if the dam is lacking). The big deal, though, is the fleeces. Vivanno consistently imparts amazing brightness, excellent fineness, and terrific density to his offspring. Thus far, more than half have inherited his rose grey coloring, and the remaining are maroon or black.

Dam: Callipyge

Truly true black

Callipyge

HuacayaBred (Female)True Black
AOA# 32809589DOB: 9/20/201311 yrs
This is our dear Callie. Callie is our "first cria;" although she was not born on our farm, we acquired her at two months of age in a package of some of our very first alpacas. For this reason, she is very special to us. (Her maternal half-sister, Cuppin' Cake, was the first cria ever born on our farm.) Callie's full name, Callipyge, means "beautiful buttocks" in Greek. I named her this because she had the most fantastic rear development as a young cria, and she has kept it as an adult. (Oh, how pleased I was to discover that the name Callipyge was not taken in the AOA registry!) This female has so many qualities that make her appealing. She is an ideal size: compact and square, short at the withers, yet possessed of an absolutely fantastic spring of rib. Callie is built for carrying and delivering cria! She has great coverage and a beautiful topknot, and her fleece is bright and slick, with a high-frequency crimp. Callie's dam line is an excellent one for its mothering ability (Callie's almost-full sister has now proven to have inherited that trait from their dam), heartiness and easygoing dispositions, not to mention their beautiful black fleeces. Her mother and two sisters are all sold. I am not particularly eager to sell Callie, either, because of my emotional attachment to her, but we have a good number of foundation females, and our focus is on grey ... So ... Callie has reluctantly been priced. Callie is now proven! It took her a little while to take off, but now that she has, she, like her dam, is a power milker. Awesome! Her cria is growing like crazy, and as she matures, it is evident that she is even nicer than her dam ... And thinks she may edge into silver grey territory. Not going to complain about that! Callie has been bred to one of our newest herdsires, Gray Alpaca Co's Nomad, for a 2017 cria. Nomad is a compact, beautifully built, super-super dense male with a high-frequency crimp style, fantastic staple length and the most wonderful disposition.

Description

There are some dam lines that just seem to clone themselves. Shawna's is one of them. I'm honestly not complaining, because there really aren't enough truly true, inky black alpacas with super-bright fleece out there. Shawna's dam, Callipyge, is our "first cria" in that she was acquired at two months old (one of our first alpacas ever). She, like her dam before her, is as black as they come. Her fleece is very slick and silky, with a wonderful handle and some very good density. She is also following in her dam's footsteps in being a fantastic mother. Callie was bred to Vivanno, our rose grey son of Legacy's El Duro, in the hopes of improving her density and perhaps adding a little more substance of bone. Thus far in Shawna's development, he seems to have accomplished that. She appears to be very correct, and she has a lot more presence than her dam line -- a trait straight from her sire. So far, her fleece looks to be a terrific blend of the two lines: inky blue black, slick, and super bright, with a deep, bold crimp, very good fineness and density. She is also starting to display one of her sire's strongest traits: his excellent staple length! Coming up on four months of age, Shawna is maturing into a very solidly-built, very nice little female. She looks an awful lot like her dam did at her age, only with even better conformation and bone. Also, unlike her dam, Shawna is also starting to edge very definitively into modern grey territory. She isn't there yet, but her jet black blanket is now flecked thoroughly with white fibers. At her age, I am optimistic that this means that she may blossom into a dark silver grey.
