Description
One October, I was away from the farm from 6 - 9:15pm. When I arrived home, I headed out into the brisk 29 degree air, towards the barn. To my chagrin, I spotted a small newborn cria on the drylot. As I lifted his wet, cold, lifeless body, there was no response. I ran into the barn, and quickly analyzed the situation. No movement, fixed stare, iced-cold tongue, and no registering temperature on the thermometer. I was pretty sure he was gone.
I then got my stethescope, and listened closely. Nothing. Then, I rubbed and rubbed, and patted his chest. I listened again. And then suddenly."ba-bump.babump" HE WAS ALIVE!! Barely, but alive! I scooped him up in my towel, and ran up to the house, with his lifeless body bouncing in my arms.
I placed his limp body in a plastic bag, and submerged him into the bathtub, filled with 100 degree water. I rubbed and rubbed. No response. Blank stare. But I saw a slight flicker of the nostrils! I pulled him out and took his temp. Still no reading. Back in again. I did this for about an hour, every once in a while, listening to his faint slow heartbeat, and taking his temp. Letting cooler water out, and refilling with warmer water.
After 1 hour, I finally got a reading. 92 degrees! Back in the tub... rub rub rub... and after 1/2 hour, he began to get a sparkle in his eyes, like someone was home. Still no body movement though, but his heart beat was stronger, and quicker. 1/2 hour later, and after 2 hours in the tub, we reached 100 degrees!
I pulled him out, and with space heaters raging, I now began to blowdry my soggy little treasure. After another 1/2 hour, he finally gave his first attempt to move his tiny legs. He weighed in at 12 pounds!
His IgG was 1540, and he is doing great! So remember... don't give up! There may just be a little life in there, who needs your help!
