This guy "Tex" is stellar. I would have to say that out of all his qualities, his handle is probably his best. He has retained his "silky" style fleece well into maturity. Please look at his histograms. It is simply incredible. He just has the most luxurious feeling fleece that you don't want to take your hands out of it. He's dense, ultrafine, very consistent, and super sweet and gorgeous. But what else could we expect for our last Snowmass Porteus cria and what would also turn out to be our last Snowmass Don Julio's Prestige cria? Of course we expected a lot, but we definitely got much more! As he has matured, I have to say he may have the nicest fleece on the ranch. His fineness has barely changed from a juvi to a four year old breeding male.
We’re breeding him to girls that can benefit from his phenomenal fineness and brightness. Our experienced fleece sorter could not get over his fineness and had a difficult time finding primary fibers. They were there, but so close to his secondaries that they were hard to distinguish. Tex (at 2) was graded as less than a standard grade 1, (grade 1A). Tex has one of the nicest handling fleeces in our pasture and we’re anxious for him to infuse that, along with his Snowmass Don Julio genetics. Tex is owned by our son Davis .
He did well in the show ring with 3 First Place ribbons and a Second. After his First Place at the 2012 Futurity and SBC Show, the judge commented that he was the "clear winner" and "standout in the class with his incredibly fine, bright, long, dense fleece with a complete lack of primaries and consistent throughout".
He showed as a White at TXOLAN and took a 2nd Place out of 15 alpacas, but at Futurity, Judge Jude Anderson put him in Beige where he took a 1st Place. When he showed the following year as a beige at TXOLAN 2013, he took a 1st Place in a very competitive group.
His dam is the incomparable Snowmass Don Julio's Prestige who was held in the highest regard and is the dam to the $150,000 high selling grey male Premiere's Absolute. His sire is Snowmass Porteus and is regarded as one of or the top Xxxtreme son. Due to his sire's untimely death, Portejas is one of only 2 sons that we own and while Porteus was a genetic advancement and poster boy for silky style fleece, "Tex" is a stunning advancement on his sire. Take a look at the royal lineage on his certificate.
