Cognac is an Incan alpaca type - very compact, strong boned, and correct in his conformation. He is loaded with ultra-fine colored fleece genetics. Photographs don't do justice to his gorgeous color - he is truly the color of a fine glass of Cognac. With only 10 months of growth between shearings, his fleece weighed in at over 7 pounds. And what fleece it is - you won't find many dark fawn males with 18 micron fleeces. Cognac's sire, 5Peruvian Red Hot, is a Vicuna quality brown male out of the elite North American Alpaca Stud also with an 18 micron fleece. Red Hot's progeny have been consistently winning their classes at the All American Futurity. Peruvian Red Hot has been an integral part of the Snowmass colored program. Julie Skinner notes that Red Hot was born out of Black Peruvian Dam and was such an incredible cria, unrelated to any of the colored alpacas in their program, that they never even dared take him off the farm. Snowmass was able to use him over all the offspring from most other males their herd, to deepen the fineness and consistency of their colored breeding program, placing Red Hot squarely among the top colored males Snowmass has ever used. Cognac is among the very few Red Hot sons available for outside breedings in the country. Of equal importance in Cognac's lineage are his two grand dams - 5Peruvian Ajoyani and 6Pervuvian Silent Night. These are two of the most significant black dams imported from Peru that served as the foundation of the colored herd at Snowmass Alpacas. It is particularly rare to find both of these lines represented in a single male. In 2014 we had to bid a final farewell to Cognac. His genetics are captured deep in our herd and we miss him greatly. We keep him listed here as a lasting tribute.

Description

We had high hopes for a fine cria when we paired our elite Peruvian stud Snowmass Red Hot Cognac with our Indian Princess - we were not disappointed, just a little surprised that two fawns produced an amazingly bright white offspring. Cognac’s Ice Prince is a very fine fleeced cria with an amazing amount of fleece and it is all so bright that he glows. He is a combination of some rare genetics – a combination we are sure to repeat. His sire is our own Snowmass Red Hot Cognac. Cognac is a rare stud who carries some of the most highly prized dark color lines from the acclaimed herd at Snowmass. His sire, 5Pervuvian Red Hot, is from the maternal line of 5Peruvian Ajoyani. Ajoyani is also the dam of Snowmass Midnight Magic – the black stud who took top billing at Snowmass following the departure of Snowmass Nova. Cognac’s dam, 6Peruvian White Night, is the daughter of 6Peruvian Silent Night. Silent Night was the top pick by Snowmass in the last Peruvian importation and is arguably the finest black female imported from Peru. His dam is our Indian Princess, known to us as Indi. She is sired by Bolivian Chieftain from the herd at Alpacas of America. If you don’t know Bolivian Chieftain you had best start doing some research. He may be the finest Bolivian stud in the country, imprinting perfect conformation and very fine fleece onto his offspring. Indi is no exception. She has maintained a sub-20 micron count into her 5th year – even while nursing and holding a pregnancy. Indi’s dam Martha Keller is one of the top producers at Alpacas of America with offspring featured year in and year out in their annual auction. We have too many boys and need to make room in the paddocks NOW. Ice Prince has nice size, fine fleece, and great genetic potential, he just does not have the fleece character we like to see in our breeding males. He could be used to add fineness or serve as a fiber male.
