Snowmass Red Hot Cognac

Cognac is an Incan alpaca type - very compact, strong boned, and correct in his conformation. He is loaded with ultra-fine colored fleece genetics. Photographs don't do justice to his gorgeous color - he is truly the color of a fine glass of Cognac. With only 10 months of growth between shearings, his fleece weighed in at over 7 pounds. And what fleece it is - you won't find many dark fawn males with 18 micron fleeces. Cognac's sire, 5Peruvian Red Hot, is a Vicuna quality brown male out of the elite North American Alpaca Stud also with an 18 micron fleece. Red Hot's progeny have been consistently winning their classes at the All American Futurity. Peruvian Red Hot has been an integral part of the Snowmass colored program. Julie Skinner notes that Red Hot was born out of Black Peruvian Dam and was such an incredible cria, unrelated to any of the colored alpacas in their program, that they never even dared take him off the farm. Snowmass was able to use him over all the offspring from most other males their herd, to deepen the fineness and consistency of their colored breeding program, placing Red Hot squarely among the top colored males Snowmass has ever used. Cognac is among the very few Red Hot sons available for outside breedings in the country. Of equal importance in Cognac's lineage are his two grand dams - 5Peruvian Ajoyani and 6Pervuvian Silent Night. These are two of the most significant black dams imported from Peru that served as the foundation of the colored herd at Snowmass Alpacas. It is particularly rare to find both of these lines represented in a single male. In 2014 we had to bid a final farewell to Cognac. His genetics are captured deep in our herd and we miss him greatly. We keep him listed here as a lasting tribute.

Dam: June's Bug

June's Bug

HuacayaOpen (Female)True Black
AOA# 30005181DOB: 6/14/200519 yrs
June's Bug is the most recent addition to our select herd. After seeing that both of our herdsires were capable of throwing black offspring we've been in search of the right true black female to deepen our herd's genetic color pool. The Bug was the answer. We first saw her at Chase Tavern last year but purchased our Evander daughter instead. When we saw the Bug again at AOBA Nationals we knew we had to have her. June's Bug is the epitome of black genetics. Her sire is MFI Peruvian Black Mesquite, a male who is earning his reputation as one of the best black studs in North America. His offspring are commanding top dollar at auction and are dominating the black classes in the showring and in fleece shows. Black Mesquite is a son of the legendary black stud Peruvian Matador and a top producing dam at Magical Farms. Bug's dam is the true black Lady June Woldbrook. Every alpaca in Lady June's pedigree is true black. She is descended from rare New Zealand bloodlines. According to Cindy Lavan, Lady June's New Zealand roots are from a ranch that specialized in breeding black alpacas. Even though her pedigree already shows nothing but black, her black genetics run deeply past ARI records to her New Zealand past. Not surprisingly, pairing a top black stud like Black Mesquite with a dam like Lady June produced a very fine fleeced true black daughter. In addition to her fineness June Bug also demonstrates very nice fleece character and crimp. We are excited about breeding her. June Bug is now breeding to our Ultimate stud Snowmass Porteus. Pairing the Porteus (Snowmass Casanova and Snowmass XXXtreme) with the Black Mesquite line is a no brainer. This will be a great cria. UPDATE: June Bug delivered a handsome black male cria. Time will tell on his color. For now, he is growing like a weed and making a total pest of himself with the other alpacas in his pasture. We just love little Blue Gate Ascot. Ascot has been to two show and has come home with two blue ribbons!

Description

Blue Gate November Night gave us a pleasant surprise at shearing when he revealed that his fleece is actually dark rose gray. We were not expecting a modern gray when we planned this breeding, but we are happy with the outcome. This young male is the product of some of the most celebrated and treasured dark color genetics in the country. His sire is our own elite Peruvian stud, Snowmass Red Hot Cognac. Cognac's claim to fame is that both of this grand-dams are among the best dark imports into the acclaimed Snowmass herd - 6Peruvian Silent Night and 5Peruvian Ajoyani. Look at the descendants of these two females and you will find some of the best dark color alpacas around. His dam is a daughter of MFI Peruvian Black Mesquite. A son of 4Peruvian Matador, Black Mesquite's black color offspring are highly valued in our industry. We could not resist the opportunity to bring June's Bug into our foundation herd knowing that she would eventually be paired with Cognac. If you look at the genetic makeup of Snowmass Mignight Magic, one of the best black alpacas to be released from the Snowmass herd, you will see a great deal in common with the genetics packed into Blue Gate November Night. Acquiring this young male would be a great opportunity for a farm looking to bring elite genetics into their herd at a very reasonable price. Since we can repeat this breeding we are willing to part with this impressive young male.
