It is with an extremely heavy heart that we announce that our beautiful Xena, exceptional mother of numerous of our champion and ribbon winning alpacas, passed away on Saturday, July 17th, 2010, following the delivery of a breech stillborn cria. We will miss her terribly, the pasture seems so empty without her presence, but we are thankful that her passing was quick, in the field she was born in 10 years ago, surrounded by her pasture 'mates' and her daughter from last year by her side.
Rest peacefully, dear Xena!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xena is an exceptional female! She has exquisite fiber and the presence of a princess. Her 2010 Yocom McColl histogram at 10 years of age is exceptional: Micron - 23.1; SD - 4.6; CV - 20.1; >30 - 3.9, curvature 40.6, medulated fibers 10.9!
Xena did extremely well in the show ring. At the 2001 Canadian Calcutta in Edmonton, she placed 1st in her class and went on to win Color Reserve Champion (approx. 49 animals in the white classes) and Juvenile Breed Reserve Champion (approx. 73 juvenile animals in total). This show was judged by three judges, each judging independently of the other. She went on to win another Reserve Champion title, as well as 1st Place Produce of Dam at the 2005 Southern Alberta Alpaca Show.
Xena's cria with Fibre Works Technicolour arrived on July 1, 2008. He's a handsome dark brown male, with black points - aptly named "Sir John Eh". He has exceptionally long staple length and soft, soft handle to his bold crimp fleece. He's a 'looker' and we anticipate he will be popular with the 'ladies' in a few years time!
Xena's 2009 cria arrived on July 7 and she is absolutely stunning! Her name is MHR Misty's Peruvian Lily and we think she is one of the best, if not the best, cria that has been born on our farm. The crimp, lock structure, fineness and brightness of her fleece is simply outstanding! Both Xena and Kazam contributed their best to this female!
Lily is so outstanding, we simply had to repeat this breeding - so Xena has been bred back to Ghost River Kazam for a July 2010 cria. We understand now why breeders have returned for a second breeding to him and have been so impressed with the outcome of their initial breeding. His cria have very impressive fiber characteristics, including matchstick bundling, high frequency crimp, very good uniformity and density; and when matched with an exceptional female - the result is very, very impressive.
